“The Happy Cemetery” in Săpânța

(29 August 2023)

Just 18 km west of Sighetu Marmatiei is the “Merry Cemetery”, one of the most visited tourist attractions in the Maramureș region.

The crosses, which have been painted by local craftsmen, are full of life and predominantly blue in color.

The idea for the cemetery was born in 1935 and belonged to the woodcarver Stan Ioan Patras. He wanted to create a cemetery, unique in Romania, which would show the life and personality of the deceased in a cheerful representation. Each cross has an image carved on the top, representing a special moment in the life of the deceased. Underneath, short, humorous poems or rhyming texts describe the life of the person buried there.

Hermannstadt (Sibiu) in Transylvania

(29 August 2023)

Sibiu (in Romanian Sibiu, in Hungarian Nagyszeben and in Transylvanian Saxon Hermestatt) is a town in the geographical region of Transylvania and was/is one of the centers of the Transylvanian Saxons.

Probably in 1147, the first German settlers arrived in the area; they settled on the hill above the Zibin river, today’s Upper Town. The first documentary mention of the town dates back to 1191, under the name of praepositum Cibiniensem; a prepository was established. From 1223 the Latin name “Villa Hermanni” and from 1241 the German equivalent Hermannstorf.

In the 14th century, Hermannstadt developed into a commercial center of international importance. It was one of the most important towns in Transylvania – perhaps even the most important, as it was not only the center of trade, administration and the church, but also had the largest fortifications in the whole of Transylvania.

Fortified churches in Transylvania | Holzmengen

(29 August 2023)

There are over 180 fortified churches in the Transylvania region, one of them being Holzmengen / Hosman.

Overview of all 180 fortified churches:
https://xn--urlaub-in-rumnien-2qb.de/de/uir/kirchenburgen/

From the basilica built in the 13th century, only the west portal and the arched pillars separating the nave from the aisles have survived. The west portal is a valuable testimony to Transylvanian Romanesque architectural sculpture, with numerous friezes in relief.

Around 1500, the church belfry was erected with wooden volumes and equipped with a battalion – supported by brackets. The side aisles of the church were also demolished. The two walls of the fortress, built in the 15th century, are connected by the gate tower and still show traces of the former battlements and battlements.

The gorges are located in the commune of Bănița in Hunedoara county and stretch along high limestone walls. They are about 300 meters long and were dug deep into the limestone by water. The height of the rock walls is about 10-15 meters and show how water has eroded the rock. In many places, the rocks form a roof, which was formed by horizontal erosion by current over hundreds of years.

The king granted them numerous privileges, including immunity, the right of self-government and the building of stone fortresses to secure the surrounding area. Bran Castle (or Törzburg, Bran Castle, Törcsvar) is located in the Transylvania region of Romania.

Whether Dracula (or his namesake “Vlad the Third Dracula”) lived here or elsewhere, the castle is definitely a sight to see and well worth a visit, with its museum.

From 1920-1947, it was the royal residence of King Ferdinand I and his wife, Queen Maria, and their daughter, Princess Ileana, who inherited the castle from her mother in 1938. The castle is currently owned by the Habsburg family, who received it back from the Romanian state as legal property in the 2006 succession.

A motorcycle trip | The lock on the sacristy door in Biertan

(21 August 2023)

And again we learn something new through the journey of “Schnuff” and his biker friends (part 9 of x).

Biertan, parish and fortified church: The three portals of the church have been preserved in their original medieval state. Both the sandstone tracery and the doors themselves date from the 16th century. The lock of the north portal is a so-called Vexierschloss*.

The lock on the sacristy door has 13 bolts, dates back to the 15th century (dated 1515) and was exhibited in Paris in 1905 at the Universal Exhibition.

* An enigma lock is a device in the form of a lock that can be opened with a concealed / camouflaged device, if the lock has not previously been locked with a key.

A motorcycle trip | Biertan | Biertan | Sibiu county

And we continue to follow the journey of “Schnuff” and his biker friends, today part 8 of x.

The fortified church of Biertan is located in the commune of Biertan (in German Birthälm, in Hungarian Berethalom) in the county of Sibiu, in Transylvania. Biertan belongs to the earliest German-Saxon settlements and has been mentioned in documents as early as 1398 (other sources: 1402).

Like any Saxon settlement, it is characterized by the clustering of houses around a central square surmounted by the imposing church-church. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon bishopric (episcopal see of the Protestant A.B. Church), which encouraged the building of one of the largest farming communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure in Romania, definitely worth a visit.

The listed castle bears many other names (Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvineștilor, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul din Piața de Fier, Castelul Negru, Castelul Vajdahunyad, Castelul Hunyadi), which can be attributed to its location or its owners.

After 1440, the Hungarian statesman and army commander Johann Hunyadi had an existing fortification rebuilt and turned it into the ancestral castle of the Hunyadi family. In the second construction phase, the castle was extended from 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. At the beginning of the 17th century, further major changes were made to the building under Prince Gabor Bethlen, so today’s castle is a mixture of different architectural styles.

Nature reserve and biosphere reserve. We can’t capture the true beauty of this delta in photos, but we can help you get an idea of this aquatic paradise that Romania hosts in the south-east of the country.

The Danube Delta is a wild and charming corner, where the only traces of civilization are the boats that occasionally pass through the labyrinth of water channels.

Statue of Decebal | Dubova City Hall

(13 August 2023)

The statue of the Dacian king Decebalus (in Romanian Decebal, ca. 86-106 AD) is 55 meters high and is the largest / tallest stone sculpture in Europe.

It is located on a rock formation in the Almajului Mountains, on the banks of the Danube, near the commune of Dubova (Mehedinți County), in the Iron Gates Natural Park (Parcul Natural Porțile de Fier).

It took 10 years, a million US dollars and 12 sculptors to create… and it was not commissioned by the Dacian king himself, as one might have thought, but by a Romanian businessman and historian between 1994 and 2004.

Râșnov Town and Fortress | Dinopark

(10 August 2023)

Râșnov (Rosenau) is about 20 km from Brasov, on the road to Bran Castle.

Rosenau (Rașnov) is a small town with about 15 tds. inhabitants, a fortress and a dinosaur park. In the 14th century, the castle was built above the town on limestone cliffs. The Rasnov Dinopark is just 200 meters behind the fortress (image reference). So nothing stands in the way of a great family outing.

Berislăvești Monastery | Valcea county

(10 August 2023)

Only 8 km from Călimănești, on the left bank of the Olt river, in the commune of Berislăvești, there is a precious monument of late feudal architecture – the monastery of the same name – the foundation of the nobleman Sandu Bucșenescu and his wife Maria.

In his first will, Sandu Bucsenescu, the founder of several holy places, wrote that he built this church, painted it and endowed it with “sacred vessels and priestly vestments” as well as land. In his second testament, written on December 6, 1760, the founder expressed his wish that a school for poor children should be established in the monastery’s monastery cells. Work began in 1752-1753 and was completed in 1762 under the direction of Abbot Nicodim Beligrad. The school also began to function.

The monastery complex consists of a slightly trapezoidal fortified complex, at the center of which is a triangular church with a narrow rectangular pronaos. Later, an open porch with six decorated columns at the capitals and trefoiled arches was added. On the north side of the complex was the rectory, a rectangular building with remarkable vaulted cellars. On the west side of the complex the bell tower, which also served as a gate tower, with three large silver bells from the founding period, has been preserved.

The spiritual life of the hermitage developed under the auspices of the time; it was originally a monastic settlement. In 1864, the hermitage church dedicated to the Holy Three Hierarchs was briefly transformed into a parish church and monastic life was resumed. Since 1948, the hermitage has been without monks and was again converted into a church for the parish faithful.

Marienburg / Feldioara | Brasov county

(7 August 2023)

Marienburg in Feldioara (the Romanian name of the village of the same name, Marienburg) is a medieval castle of the Teutonic Order in the region of Transylvania, Brasov County.

It offers a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside and the mountains of Brasov (German: Kronstadt), is located about 20 kilometers from Brasov on the road to Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg) and was built on a hill (just under 500 meters above sea level).

In 1211, King Andrew II of Hungary called the Teutonic Knights into the country to support him against the Cumans and to secure the eastern border of his growing kingdom. The king granted them numerous privileges, including immunity, the right of self-government and the building of stone fortresses to secure the surrounding area. In 1838, the town of Marienburg (Romanian name: Feldioara) with Ordensburg Marienburg was severely destroyed by an earthquake. Between 2013 and 2017, the castle ruins were largely renovated and rebuilt.

(6 August 2023 / Images: August 2021)

Piatra Neamț (Castle of the Cross of Bistrița, literally translated: Piatra Neamț) is the county seat of Neamț County in northeastern Romania.

The city is situated in the historical region of Western Moldavia, on the terraces on the left bank of the Bistrița (Bistriz), surrounded by the foothills of the Eastern Carpathians, the mountains Pietricica, Cozla, Cernegura and Bâtca Doamnei. The oldest traces of a settlement in today’s urban area date back to the Middle Stone Age (ca. 12,000 BC) at Poiana Cireșului (“Cherry Meadow”).

The town was founded in the late 14th century as Piatra lui Craciun. It developed into a renowned economic and craft center after the establishment of a princely court by Stephen the Great, Prince of Moldavia (1433-1504). The nearby village of Târgu Neamț was the center of a German-speaking settler colony in the Middle Ages, hence the name: Neamț is an obsolete Romanian term for “German”.

Piatra Neamț was founded in the late 14th century as Piatra lui Craciun and developed into a renowned economic and craft center after the establishment of a princely court by Stefan the Great, Prince of Moldavia (1433-1504). From 1920-1947, it was the royal residence of King Ferdinand I and his wife, Queen Maria, and their daughter, Princess Ileana, who inherited the castle from her mother in 1938. Our advice: Harman | Honey Mountain | Brasov county

(3 August 2023 / Images: July 2023)

Honigberg (in Saxon Huntschprich, in Hungarian Szaszhermany) is a commune and a village, one of the most famous fortified churches, in the county of Brasov, in the Transylvania region.

https://xn--urlaub-in-rumnien-2qb.de/en/uir/the-fortress-of-harman/

This fortified church is a fully preserved small fortress with the church in the center. Besides an interesting museum, you can also visit the battlements, the tower and the church. You really have to have seen it and it is also for families with children, because of the many corridors, staircases and more … an interesting and wonderful experience

About the place: In 1211, the Hungarian King Andrew II granted Burzenland to the Teutonic Knights, who settled here, built castles, brought German settlers to the country and founded villages, including Honigberg.

The first documentary mention was in 1240 under the name of Mons Mellis (“Honey Mountain”), at which time King Bela IV granted the Cistercian Order the patronage of the churches of Marienburg, Petersberg, Honigberg and Tartlau.

Hermannstadt (Sibiu) in Transylvania

(2 August 2023 / Images: July 2023)

In the 14th century, Hermannstadt developed into a trading center of international importance. It was one of the most important towns in Transylvania – perhaps even the most important, as it was not only the center of trade, administration and the church, but also had the largest fortifications in the whole of Transylvania.

Cârța Monastery (Kerz) | Transylvania

(2 August 2023 / Images: July 2023)

Carta Monastery (Kerz in German) is a former Cistercian/Bened Benedictine monastery in Sibiu county, Transylvania.

It is located on the left bank of the Olt River, between the cities of Sibiu and Făgăraș, and is currently an Evangelical Lutheran church. The exact date of the foundation of the Carta Monastery (Latin: monasterium beatae Mariae virginis in Candelis de Kerch) is unknown.

A document from Constance of April 17, 1418, issued by Sigismund, King of Hungary, vaguely states that the monastery was founded, built and granted rights and privileges by its predecessors. Cistercian documents from the 13th-15th centuries, collected and analyzed by Leopold Janauschek, mention the year of the foundation of the monastery as around 1202-1203.

Fortified Church Biertan

(1 August 2023)

This church / fortified church is located in the commune of Biertan (in German Birthälm, in Hungarian Berethalom) in the county of Sibiu, Transylvania.

Biertan belongs to the first German-Saxon settlements and was mentioned in documents as early as 1398 (other sources: 1402).

Like any Saxon settlement, it is characterized by the cluster of houses around a central square surmounted by the imposing church-church.

Banitei Gorges | Banitei Gorges

the top of high limestone walls.

They are about 300 meters long and have been cut deep into the limestone by water. On calm summer days they can be visited, although waterproof shoes are a must as the gorge path also passes through water.

The height of the rock walls is about 10-15 meters and show how water has eroded the rock. In many places, the rocks form a roof that was formed by horizontal erosion by current over hundreds of years.
