Lake Bâlea… up in the clouds

(31 March 2023)

Lake Bâlea is a glacial lake in the Romanian Carpathians. It is located in the Făgăraș Mountains on the Transfăgărășan Road between the Negoiu and Moldoveanu Mountains. And what looks like fog here are probably clouds (thanks for the information Mr. George Cus) simply because the lake is so high.

The lake is located in the county of Sibiu and is about 80 km from the city of Sibiu (Hermannstadt in German) and about 70 km from the city of Făgăraș (in German Fogarash or Fugreschmarkt).

At present (now at the end of March), this region should still be covered with a lot of snow, and traveling there is only possible by cable car.

Kerz Monastery in Transylvania

(30 March 2023 / Images: January 2023)

Carta Monastery (Kerz in German) is a former Cistercian (Benedictine) monastery in the Făgăraș region of Transylvania, Romania. It is located on the left bank of the Olt River, between the cities of Sibiu and Făgăraș, and is now an evangelical Lutheran church.

The exact date of the foundation of Carta Monastery (Latin: monasterium beatae Mariae virginis in Candelis de Kerch) is unknown. A document from Constance of April 17, 1418, issued by Sigismund, King of Hungary, vaguely states that the monastery was founded, built and granted rights and privileges by its predecessors. Cistercian documents from the 13th-15th centuries, collected and analyzed by Leopold Janauschek, mention the founding year of the monastery as around 1202-1203.

Fortified churches in Transylvania – wooden fortresses

(28 March 2023)

There are over 160 fortified churches in the Transylvania region, one of which is Holzmenge / Hosman.

Only the west portal and the arched pillars separating the nave and aisles survive from the basilica, which was built in the 13th century. The west portal is a valuable testimony to Transylvanian Romanesque architectural sculpture with numerous relief friezes. Around 1500, the bell-tower of the church was enlarged in wood and equipped with a crenel supported by brackets. In the course of this, the side aisles of the church were removed. The two fortress walls, built in the 15th century, are connected by the gate tower and still show traces of the former battlements and gatehouses.

Hermannstadt (Sibiu) in Transylvania

(26 March 2023)

Sibiu (in Hungarian Nagyszeben and in Transylvanian-Saxon Hermestatt) is a town in the geographical region of Transylvania and was/is one of the centers of the Transylvanian Saxons.

The first German settlers probably arrived in the area in 1147; they settled on the hill above the Zibin River, today’s upper town. The first written mention of the town dates from 1191 as praepositum Cibiniensem; a priest was established. From 1223 the Latin name “Villa Hermanni” is documented and from 1241 the German equivalent Hermannstorf.

In the 14th century, Sibiu developed into a commercial center of international importance. It was one of the most important towns in Transylvania – perhaps even the most important, as it was not only a center of trade, administration and church, but also had the largest fortifications in the whole of Transylvania.

Lunch was nice: leek soup and focaccia with garlic and rosemary

(23 March 2023)

These pictures are less than two hours old. A sunny terrace with a view over the Danube and what feels like 25 degrees, something we love about Galati in south-eastern Romania.

In the picture: Ciorba de perisoare, a traditional Romanian soup with meatballs and vegetables. Like all dishes with “ciorba” in the name, this is leavened and, depending on the region, there may be slight changes to the basic recipe. Our travel tip: Pensiunea (Pension) Silba in Vad, near Făgăraș

(21 March 2023 / Pictures: April 2021)

If you are planning a vacation in the corner of Făgăraș (halfway between Sibiu and Brașov and vice versa) (there is beautiful nature, the Făgăraș Mountains, many monasteries and other tourist attractions, and Brașov (Kronstadt) and Sibiu (Hermannstadt) are not far away either…) you will find very cheap, beautiful and very clean accommodation here.

Pension Silba in Vad is about 20 km from Făgăraș and you can reach many excursion destinations in a short time.

A double room (for 2 persons) costs from 150 lei per night (approx. 32 euro, so 16,- euro/person) and if you look at the pictures… you can’t say “no” The pension is ideal for families as there are many outdoor playgrounds for children, for adults to “party” and more. The kitchen can also be used by each visitor for self-catering. This is a tip we have tested ourselves and absolutely recommend.

Fortified Churches in Transylvania – Pretai

(21 March 2023)

There are over 160 fortified churches in the Transylvania region, one of which is Pretai/Brăteiu.

Only a few remnants of the 14th-century Gothic basilica remain today. Today’s church shows features of the 15th century. The interior of the church has been greatly altered by removing the southern row of pillars, raising the exterior walls and installing a barrel vault. Of particular note are the pillars between the north and center aisles, which have profiled cross-sections and figurative capitals.

In the journey through the valley of the Great Kokel (Târnava Mare), a few kilometers east of Mediaș (MedJugendbauhütte Pretaiia?), the fortified church of Brateiu appears. It is situated in the middle of the village on the village green.

St. Nicholas Church in Densuș

(14 March 2023)

The Church of St. Nicholas in Densuș (Demsdorf), Hunedoara county in western Romania is the oldest stone church in the country. It was built in its present form in the 13th century on the site of a 2nd-century Roman temple using materials from the Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa. There are 15th-century murals in the church, showing Jesus in traditional Romanian clothes.

According to Romanian historians, there was once a Dacian temple on the site of today’s church, which was built for the god Zamolxis. Later conquered by the Romans, they again built a temple there, which was dedicated to the god Mars. Given its later prehistory, the origins of this church in Densuș date back to the 4th century AD and is therefore the oldest church in Romania and south-eastern Europe.

Hunedoara / Corvin Castle – wonderful pictures

(11 March 2023)

Hunedoara / Corvin Castle – great pictures The rock castle was built on the remains of a 14th-century fortification and is located in the south-western part of Hunedoara (German name: Eisenmarkt) in western Romania.

The listed castle has many other names (Corvin Castle, Corviner Castle, Corvinus Castle, Corvinesti Castle, Corvin Castle, Eisenmarkt Castle, Black Castle, Vajdahunyad Castle, Hunyadi Castle), which can be traced back to its location or owners.

After 1440, Hungarian statesman and army commander Johann Hunyadi had an existing fortification converted into the ancestral home of the Hunyadi family. In the second phase of construction, the castle was extended from 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. In the early 17th century, under the reign of Prince Gábor Bethlen, further major changes were made to the building. Today’s castle is therefore a mixture of different architectural styles.

The castle has been in Austrian ownership since 1724 and in Romanian ownership since 1918. In addition to being a tourist attraction, the castle is (and has been) used as a backdrop for a large number of Romanian and international film productions. There is currently a museum in the castle.

With the Reformation in Transylvania, which on the part of the Transylvanian-Saxon population was largely driven by the reformer and later Kronstadt priest Johannes Honterus, the Catholic patronage was abandoned. The Black Church bears its current name from a fire in the town in 1689.

An unfulfilled love story

(9 March 2023 / Images: Early July 2020)

Ugron Castle in Zau de Câmpie

The castle of Zau de Câmpie was built on the model of a calendar. It has 365 windows corresponding to the days, 4 towers corresponding to the seasons, 52 rooms for the weeks of a year, 7 terraces for the days of a week and 12 corridors for the months of a year. The castle is marked by an unrequited love story between its owner and a Russian princess.

The castle’s owner, Count Istvan Ugron, the Austro-Hungarian ambassador to Russia, fell in love with one of the daughters of Russian Tsar Nicholas II. However, he was unable to fulfill all the princess’s expectations and requests (including paving the road to the castle with gold coins) and so stopped courting her.

There are now plans to renovate the castle so that it can be used for various purposes in the future.

(8 March 2023)

Peles Castle is located about 1.5 kilometers northwest of the town of Sinaia.

It was built for King Carol I of Romania between 1873 and 1883 and seized by the communist regime in 1947. After the Romanian Revolution in 1989, Peles was returned to the former King Michael, who lived in exile in Switzerland. The windows and half-timbered walls are reminiscent of Hohenzollern Castle, the home of the king. Seven terraces surround the castle. Some of the 160 rooms can now be visited.

The castle museum houses weapons, sculptures, furniture and decorative objects from the 15th to 19th centuries and an orchestra. The castle especially impresses with its magnificent wooden structures.

Fortified Church of Biertan

(6 March 2023)

The church is located in the municipality of Biertan in Sibiu county in Transylvania. Biertan belongs to the first German-Saxon settlements and was mentioned in a document in 1398 (other sources: 1402).

Like any Saxon settlement, it stands out thanks to a string of villages around a central square, above which rises the imposing fortress of the church. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon bishopric (episcopal see of the Evangelical A.B. Church), which fostered the building of one of the largest agricultural communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure in Romania that is definitely worth a visit.

Markets in Romania | Pictures from a market in Galati

(5 March 2023)

Besides the “typical German” shopping possibilities such as Lidl, Penny, Kaufland, DM and many others, there are far more shopping possibilities in Romania than in D and A. The so-called “Groceries” in every village and almost on every street corner (comparable to the Edeka stores of 30 years ago) in the cities are open 7 days a week, many of them (especially in the cities) even 24/7.

Unlike in Germany and Austria, all supermarkets in Romania are open every day (including Sundays), generally from 7:00 to 22:00 or, in shopping centers, from 10:00 onwards. Before or during holidays, some supermarkets may even be open 7 days/24 hours (e.g. the Carrefour supermarket chain in France).

But, back to the pictures, there are daily markets (called Piata, comparable to German weekly markets, but seven times a week) all over the country, which also offer fresh products (mostly fruits and vegetables, bakery products, but also many other products) fresh from the region and neighboring or nearby countries (Turkey). One thing that makes Romania even more attractive for a vacation … walking every morning through the market and buying fresh food for a day. Where else can you do that in the German-speaking world!

On the subject of prices, as of this morning, the images are in LEI (RON). Divide that by 5 and you get an idea of how much the products cost in euros. Examples: green onions, spring onions, 2.50 lei/bushel = 50 cents, apples up to 4 lei/kg, about 80 cents. Strawberries are 15 lei (3 euro) / bowl and delicious… we couldn’t resist.

And please note: The offer / prices / pictures are from Galați, of course they vary depending on the season and region and therefore can be even higher or possibly lower.

St. Nicholas Church in Densuș

(2 March 2023)

Mogoșoaia Castle, near Bucharest

(1 March 2023)

In Ilfov County, just a few kilometers northwest of Bucharest (Romania’s capital), Mogoșoaia Castle is located on the shores of Lake Mogoșoaia in Mogoșoaia. The castle contains a main courtyard and many buildings such as the watchtower and the church ′′Sf. Gheorghe′′ near the courtyard.

Wallachian Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu built the castle between 1698 and 1702 on the widow Mogoș (later named Mogoșoaia) in the Brâncoveanu style named after him.

In 1714, when Constantin Brâncoveanu was executed in Constantinople with his entire family, the Ottomans confiscated all the family possessions and turned the palace into a Han (a kind of inn). In the following decades, the castle was conquered, destroyed and rebuilt several times, until it was owned by George III in 1912 Valentin Bibesco married the French writer Marthe Bibesco, who was born into Romanian nobility. He gave the property to his wife, Marthe Bibesco then rebuilt the castle intensively.

The castle can be visited without entrance fee, it has a wonderful large park where you can/allow, for example, to have a picnic or just laze the day away. Inside the castle you pay a fee of approx. 10 lei (2,10 euro) for parking, restaurants, museums and much more… also an extended walk with the rest on a bench overlooking the lake… many things are possible and beautiful.

Warning… you should not take the camera with you or put it in your pocket!!! Cell phone pictures are no problem, but as a ‘camera owner’ you are already vehemently advised at the entrance that for professional photography you have to pay a fee of 400 Lei (approx. EUR 80).

1 March: Mărțișor

(1 March 2023)

The marquis is a typical gift for March 1st in Romania.

It consists of a red and white ribbon, usually with a small pendant, and is attached to clothes. The so-called “mărțișor” symbolizes spring and was originally worn by women and children. The two colors (red and white) symbolize snow and the sun.

Nowadays it is mainly women who receive Märzchen as gifts. Lucky charms are attached to the thread, and as soon as someone (or in this case, the woman) sees a blossoming tree, she throws the Märzchen into it and makes a wish!
